Free virtual body double

Quick answer: type the one thing you're about to do, pick a session length, and press start. A calm on-screen companion works alongside you, checks in gently every few minutes ("Still on it?"), and gives you a session log at the end. No sign-up, no camera, nothing stored.

Runs in your browser. No sign-up, no camera, nothing you type is stored or sent. Keep this tab open.

How to use it

  1. Name one thing. "Reply to 3 emails" beats "work". If you can't name it, run it through the Task Breaker first.
  2. Pick a length. 15 minutes if starting feels hard, 25 by default, 45 or 60 once you're moving.
  3. Choose check-ins. Every 5 minutes if you drift a lot, 10 or 15 for study and deep work, or off.
  4. When it asks "Still on it?", answer honestly. "Got distracted" isn't a fail: it's how you come back.
  5. At the end, add a next tiny step and copy the log into your notes, so the next session starts itself.

What is body doubling?

Body doubling is working on a task while someone else is present, in the same room or on a video call. They don't help with the task. They're just there, doing their own thing, and for a lot of people with ADHD that makes it easier to start, stay with it and finish. It's often used for the boring stuff: admin, bills, cleaning, study.

It's worth being honest about the evidence. ADHD organisation CHADD notes that there hasn't been significant research yet on whether or how body doubling works, and that it doesn't suit everyone (a friend can turn into a chat instead of a work session). Most of what we know comes from people's own experience. (Source: CHADD, "Could a Body Double Help You Increase Your Productivity?")

Is an on-screen body double as good as a person?

No, and it isn't trying to be. A real person who's expecting you is a stronger cue. This tool is a stand-in for when nobody's around, booking a session feels like too much, or it's 11pm. Think of it like a "study with me" video that also keeps time, checks in and keeps a log. Use whatever works for you:

Turn ChatGPT or Claude into a check-in body double

Prefer to talk to something? Paste this into a new chat, then type "check" whenever this page's check-in pops up (or set a phone timer). More voice and chore prompts are on our AI body double page.

Check-in body double prompt
You're my body double for the next [25] minutes while I work on: [TASK].
Rules:
- Start by asking me for the very first small step, then say "Go. I'm here."
- When I type "check", reply in one line: ask if I'm still on it, got distracted, or finished. If I got distracted, say "That's fine, back to it" and repeat my next step. No lectures.
- If I start chatting about something else, park it in one line ("Parked: …") and steer me back.
- When I type "done", give me a 3-line log: what I worked on, where I stopped, and the next tiny step for next time.
Keep every reply under 25 words.

FAQ

Is there a free virtual body doubling website?

Yes. This page is a free virtual body double that runs in your browser with no sign-up, camera or account. Type what you're doing, pick 15 to 60 minutes, and a calm on-screen companion works alongside you with gentle check-ins. If you want a real person, Focusmate's free plan and FLOWN's free option are live alternatives (see our free body doubling apps comparison).

What is body doubling for ADHD?

Body doubling means doing a task while someone else is there, in the room or online. They don't help with the task; their presence is the point. Many people with ADHD say it makes starting and sticking with boring tasks easier. It's a practical strategy, not a treatment, and it doesn't work for everyone.

Can AI be a body double?

Partly. An AI chat or an on-screen companion can give you structure, a visible 'someone working too' cue and check-ins at any hour, for free. What it can't do is genuinely expect you, which is the bit some people need. Try this tool or the AI prompt on this page, and use a human body doubling app when you need real accountability.

Does body doubling work for studying?

Plenty of students use it: 'study with me' videos, library sessions with friends and online coworking rooms are all forms of body doubling. For study, pick one specific outcome per session (for example 'summarise section 2'), use 25 or 45 minutes, and keep check-ins at 10 or 15 minutes so they don't break your flow.

Is there a body doubling app?

Yes. Focusmate (one-to-one video), FLOWN, Deepwrk, Flow Club and Caveday (groups) are the main body doubling apps, with a mix of free plans, trials and paid memberships. This page is a lighter option: nothing to install and no booking, which helps when you need to start right now.

How long should a body doubling session be?

Long enough to finish one small, clear thing. 25 minutes is a good default. Use 15 minutes when you're struggling to start, and 45 to 60 minutes once you're already moving. You can add 5 minutes or end early at any time, and every session gets a log either way.

Do I need to keep the tab open?

Yes. The session runs in this browser tab. It keeps time in the background, and the tab title shows the countdown and check-ins so you can glance at it from another tab. Full-screen mode and wake lock (on supported browsers) help keep it visible on a second screen or tablet.
